Cozy Summer Reading: Charlie Bone, Challenge, SURPRISE IMM!

My peaches!

Happy Tuesday to all of you in book-review land.

( For those of you confused about why there is no TRILOGY TUESDAY POST today, please take a little visit here. )

Today is going to be another rather lengthy post. Actually, what's going too happen today, aside from a REVIEW, includes a PART I of another In My Mailbox.

I was going to just wait until this coming Sunday to post up an IMM (as is the usual tradition here at Auggie-Talk) but I came into quite a collection yesterday and the list is going to be too long if I post them all on Sunday. So we're going to have a PART I and a PART II In My Mailbox #7. Sound okieday? Great! I thought so too.

You'll find PART II of Auggie-Talk's IMM#7 posted this Sunday.

Mr. J and I had a date-day yesterday since he has to be out of town for the rest of the week. Alongside all of the other fun stuff we did (You're so much fun Mr. J!) he took me to our local bookstore and the library to have a look around.

CLEARANCE sections at our LBS and the Library BOOKSALE are two places that I just absolutely LOVE. Do you hear me? LOVE!

Anyway so today will =

Magic is dangerous--but love is more dangerous still.

Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What's more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by--and torn between--two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length...everyone, that is, but Tessa. But the Shadowhunting world isn't ready to let her go — especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary's only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil — and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings — and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. Stephen's death tips Carrie into a deep depression, and 15-year-old Ruth feels as if she has lost both her mother and her father. Determined to get Carrie back on track, Dana encourages her to accept a job. As Carrie begins to emerge from her depression, she finds solace in the company of her old flame, Jess, and her work as a wooden menagerie designer for a local religious group called the Arkists. The women of the Waverley family -- whether they like it or not -- are heirs to an unusual legacy, one that grows in a fenced plot behind their Queen Anne home on Pendland Street in Bascom, North Carolina. There, an apple tree bearing fruit of magical properties looms over a garden filled with herbs and edible flowers that possess the power to affect in curious ways anyone who eats them.

For nearly a decade, 34-year-old Claire Waverley, at peace with her family inheritance, has lived in the house alone, embracing the spirit of the grandmother who raised her, ruing her mother's unfortunate destiny and seemingly unconcerned about the fate of her rebellious sister, Sydney, who freed herself long ago from their small town's constraints. Using her grandmother's mystical culinary traditions, Claire has built a successful catering business -- and a carefully controlled, utterly predictable life -- upon the family's peculiar gift for making life-altering delicacies: lilac jelly to engender humility, for instance, or rose geranium wine to call up fond memories. Garden Spells reveals what happens when Sydney returns to Bascom with her young daughter, turning Claire's routine existence upside down. With Sydney's homecoming, the magic that the quiet caterer has measured into recipes to shape the thoughts and moods of others begins to influence Claire's own emotions in terrifying and delightful ways.

As the sisters reconnect and learn to support one another, each finds romance where she least expects it, while Sydney's child, Bay, discovers both the safe home she has longed for and her own surprising gifts. With the help of their elderly cousin Evanelle, endowed with her own uncanny skills, the Waverley women redeem the past, embrace the present, and take a joyful leap into the future.

Book Two in The Children of the Red King series!

Auggie-Talk Quill Rating
I was a smidge bit disappointed in the second book of the CHARLIE BONE series. Maybe the first book was so cute that I really got my hopes up. The second book wasn't BAD it just wasn't as fun as the first book and a lot of the old characters from the first bit were somewhat on the boring side. They didn't really develop any.

But, considering that from the end of the first book to the beginning of the second book there was only a time lapse of the Christmas holiday season, the characters didn't really HAVE much time to become any different. If the author would have changed them up too much maybe that would have been suspicious.

Anyway, there was some good alteration to the plot and the reader gets to find out a little bit more about Charlie's family. The dreadful aunts are back again and you hate them just as much (if not more) as usual...  it's really odd how such people could come from an apparently loving family.

Charlie discovers that there's another aspect to his ability... he can ENTER paintings and photographs! WOW. Now that's exciting and there is definitely something to be said for that bit of storyline. I'm looking forward to seeing how the author develops this.

There's a hit-and-run, a crazy pet-centered cafe, a cozy cook, and a ghost in the towers. Really very interesting stuff for young readers. I'm hoping though that things get a little more interesting in the next book... because there are quite a lot of books in this series and if it keeps going down hill I won't be able to get by the third one.

Because Mr. J is going to be gone for five days he made a bet with me... If I can read 6 books in 5 days then he'll buy me another one. Any books over 6 equal another book he'll buy!

In reality this is just a cute little game centered around the fact that he seems to doubt my ability to sit down and read for ridiculous periods of time.

Well. I'll show him! At least, I'll try. Of course my mouth might have overloaded itself considering that 2 of the five days he's gone I'll be working and 1 of those days I'll be running around trying to get wedding stuff done.

Yeaaaah. Maybe I got too cocky. But I'm going to give it my best shot.

The first two books on the list are:

"ENCHANTED GLASS" by Diana Wynne Jones.

Hey.... I never said that the books I read were going to be 500 page novels!

Anyway. That gives you a bit of a sneak peek into what the next few reviews are going to be over.

And now... the reminders!:
