 ❀ Sisters of Isis

Title: Sisters of Isis
Author: Lynne Ewing
Published: December 13, 2011
Pages: 538

Meri, Sudi, and Dalila are three girls who live in Washington, D.C., but have little else in common. Or so they think. When an ancient magic is revealed, so are their true identities as Sisters of Isis. The Summoning After receiving an anonymous invitation to dinner at the Sky Terrace, Sudi meets a mysterious guy named Abdel, and two other girls, both strangers. Sudi doesn't know whether to laugh or run when Abdel claims that she and the other girls are the descendants of Egyptian pharaohs, powerful ancestors who have given them magical gifts and powers of transformation. But when evil forces begin to threaten her world, Sudi has no choice but to believe. Divine One It's bad enough that Meri had to leave her laid-back life in California for a snobby prep school in Washington, D.C. Now her mom, Senator Stark, has decided to run for her party's presidential nomination, and Meri is being forced into the spotlight more than ever. But while Meri dodges the paparazzi, the Sisters' newest enemy--Apep, the Egyptian god of darkness and chaos--is on the loose, devouring innocent people and bringing unnatural storms. Meri knows he must be stopped. But have things already spun too far out of her control?
Thoughts - In all honesty, this really does not look interesting to me. But I was doing the thing that I do when I try to give a book the benefit of the doubt. So, we'll see.

  Hex Hall ❀

Title: Hex Hall
Author: Rachel Hawkings
Genre: YA Paranormal
March 2, 2010

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect. As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

 ❀ Demon Glass
Title: Demon Glass
Author: Rachel Hawkings
Genre: YA Paranormal
March 22, 2011

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.

That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.

But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

Thoughts: I liked the first one of the series a bit, but not enough to make me feverish about readint the second one. I have it though and I'm sure the desire to complete a series/trilogy will get me reading it eventually.

 ❀ Fallen
Title: Fallen

Author: Lauren Kate

Genre: YA Fantasy, Paranormal, Angels-Demons

Published: December 8, 2009

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Note: I am currently in the middle of reading this. I am not yet impressed and I'm hoping that I will be at some point in the next 280ish page left to go.

 ❀ The Lightening Thief

Title: The Lightning Thief
Author: Rick Riordan
Genre: Middlegrade Myth-Fantasy
Published: April 1, 2006
Pages: 377
In this stunning collectors' edition of The Lightning Thief, Percy Jackson's world is brought to life with eight full-color plates by the series jacket artist John Rocco. The edition comes in an elegant slipcase with a ribbon bookmark, rough edges, and cloth cover--a perfect keepsake for fans of this truly epic series.

After getting expelled from yet another school for yet another clash with mythological monsters only he can see, twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is taken to Camp Half-Blood, where he finally learns the truth about his unique abilities: He is a demigod, half human, half immortal. Even more stunning: His father is the Greek god Poseidon, ruler of the sea, making Percy one of the most powerful demigods alive. There's little time to process this news. All too soon, a cryptic prophecy from the Oracle sends Percy on his first quest, a mission to the Underworld to prevent a war among the gods of Olympus.

This first installment of Rick Riordan's best-selling series is a non-stop thrill-ride and a classic of mythic proportions.
Note: I'd read this one quite a while back, but I bought it for Mr. J this week so I thought I'd include it!

 ❀ The Meaning of Night

Title: The Meaning of Night
Author: Michael Cox
Genre: Historical Thriller, Mystery
Published:  September 1, 2006
Pages: 703
Edward Glyver has a confession to make: He's responsible for an unsolved, entirely random murder in Victorian London. But there are untold confessions to come, starting with the fact that Glyver is not his real name, and that his true identity, as heir to one of England's wealthiest and most influential peerages, is slowly being usurped by his childhood archrival, Phoebus Daunt.

Unwilling to accept the middle-class fate chosen for him by his mother, Edward plumbs the truth of his heritage. Deftly navigating the murky confines of London in his quest to find his mark -- an unscrupulous con man who has charmed Edward's father into making him heir to the estate -- Edward succumbs to a vice that has precipitated the downfall of many before him: revenge.

This is also one that was bought for Mr. J, but again I have every intention of eventually reading it... even though it does sound kind of intense.

 ❀ The Glass of Time
Title: The Glass of Time
Author: Michael Cox
Genre: Historical Thriller, Mystery
Published:  October 1, 2008
Pages: 586

In the autumn of 1876, nineteen-year-old orphan Esperanza Gorst arrives at the great country house of Evenwood in Northamptonshire. There she will serve as the new lady's maid to the former Emily Carteret, now Lady Tansor. But Esperanza is no ordinary servant. She has been sent by her guardian, the mysterious Madame de l'Orme, to uncover the secrets that her new mistress has sought to conceal - and to set right a past injustice in which her own life is intertwined.

Unable to escape the reverberations of past misdeeds, Lady Tansor finds herself desperate to keep Esperanza from learning dark, dangerous truths.

As well as a page-turning period mystery, The Glass of Time is a beautifully written and vividly imagined study of seduction, betrayal, and friendship between two powerful women bound together by the past.

Another one for Mr. J! This is book #2 in "The Meaning of Night" series.
